Mat, better known by his stage name Portamento, is a music producer, radio show host, and sync/soundtrack composer based in Kings Cross, who has been releasing his own productions for 20 years.
Mat began his professional career as a musician by playing psych-rock music in bands before transitioning into electronic music composition and production.
He has worked as an engineer at Goldsmiths Music Studios, instructed students in music production in local schools, and spins records on the weekends.
Under the alias 'Portamento,' he releases electronic music, and with his group 'Gumflowr,' he performs music influenced by trip-hop. He takes a goal-oriented approach to production, working closely with students to help them realise their full potential.
As an accomplished Producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist, he creates House music that is both shimmering and downbeat, using modern recording techniques together with the use of analogue drum machines and Synths.
Portamento has been described as a combination of ‘Lush reverb-soaked vocals, juxtaposed with dirty and blip-based House beats, with a foot in Indie as much as electronic music’. Portamento's debut release, "Neon Lover" (Feat. Hannie), on Coldwave records reached the top 10 on the Beatport House charts in April 2017.
This was followed by two Balearic-style releases on Open Bar Music in the fall. Dialtone Records released Portamento's debut extended play (E.P.) titled "Bones" in 2018.
